\"Words<\/a>I love wordy holidays. We spend time teaching our children that words matter, and how to read, write, and speak correctly (or at least I hope we do), and I think those home lessons are reinforced by national holidays that focus on these subjects. This week, we have two such holidays: National Grammar Day<\/a><\/strong> today, and Words Matter Week<\/a><\/strong> all week long. It’s a great opportunity to let your children know that you aren’t the only one who finds joy in beautifully written and spoken text!<\/p>\n

The best way to teach them how to appreciate and use words correctly is give them books and let them read. Read and read and read and read . . .<\/p>\n

But I digress. We are celebrating words and their usage, so I have a few resources, quotes, and links for you.<\/p>\n

A bit of history: National Grammar Day was established in 2008 by Martha Brockenbrough, founder of the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar\u00a0(SPOGG)<\/a>\u00a0and author of\u00a0Things That Make Us (Sic): The Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar Takes on Madison Avenue, Hollywood, the White House, and the World<\/a>\"\".<\/em><\/p>\n

This year’s edition of\u00a0National Grammar Day is hosted by Mignon Fogarty, the author of the\u00a0New York Times<\/em>\u00a0best-selling book\u00a0Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0The Grammar Devotional: Daily Tips for Successful Writing from Grammar Girl<\/em> (TM)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The more the words, the less the meaning, and how does that profit anyone?<\/em>\u00a0\u2013Ecclesiastes 6:11<\/p>\n

More than you may have wanted to know about grammar (a definition from Wikipedia<\/a>):\u00a0In\u00a0linguistics<\/a>,\u00a0grammar<\/b>\u00a0is the set of\u00a0structural<\/a>\u00a0rules that governs the composition of\u00a0clauses<\/a>,\u00a0phrases<\/a>, and\u00a0words<\/a>\u00a0in any given\u00a0natural language<\/a>. The term refers also to the study of such rules, and this field include smorphology<\/a>,\u00a0syntax<\/a>, and\u00a0phonology<\/a>, often complemented by\u00a0phonetics<\/a>,\u00a0semantics<\/a>, and\u00a0pragmatics<\/a>. Linguists do not normally use the term to refer to\u00a0orthographical<\/a>\u00a0rules, although\u00a0usage<\/a>\u00a0books and\u00a0style guides<\/a>\u00a0that call themselves grammars may also refer to spelling and\u00a0punctuation<\/a>.<\/p>\n
