Its kingdoms grand<br \/>\nGo down in battle shock;<br \/>\nIts shafts are laid on sinking sand,<br \/>\nNot on abiding rock.<\/p>\n<p>Is it the sword? Ask the red dust<br \/>\nOf empires passed away;<br \/>\nThe blood has turned their stones to rust,<br \/>\nTheir glory to decay.<\/p>\n<p>And is it pride? Ah, that bright crown<br \/>\nHas seemed to nations sweet;<br \/>\nBut God has struck its luster down<br \/>\nIn ashes at his feet.<\/p>\n<p>Not gold but only men can make<br \/>\nA people great and strong;<br \/>\nMen who for truth and honor\u2019s sake<br \/>\nStand fast and suffer long.<\/p>\n<p>Brave men who work while others sleep,<br \/>\nWho dare while others fly&#8230;<br \/>\nThey build a nation\u2019s pillars deep<br \/>\nAnd lift them to the sky.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ralph Waldo Emerson<\/strong> (1803 \u2013 1882) was a poet of the American Romantic era, as well as an essayist and lecturer. He is considered a leader of the nineteenth-century Transcendentalist movement. You may read more about him at my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.excellence-in-literature.com\/emerson-biography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Excellence-in-Literature<\/a> site.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men<br \/>\nand so it must be daily earned and refreshed\u2014<br \/>\nelse like a flower cut from its life-giving roots,<br \/>\nit will wither and die.&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>~President Dwight D. Eisenhower<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>And because most of America&#8217;s people &#8220;great and strong&#8221; (or their ancestors) have come from afar, I add one more poem:<\/p>\n<h3>The New Colossus<\/h3>\n<p><em>by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=6359435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emma Lazarus<\/a> (1883)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,<br \/>\nWith conquering limbs astride from land to land;<br \/>\nHere at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand<br \/>\nA mighty woman with a torch, whose flame<br \/>\nIs the imprisoned lightning, and her name<br \/>\nMother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand<br \/>\nGlows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command<br \/>\nThe air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!\u201d cries she<br \/>\nWith silent lips. \u201cGive me your tired, your poor,<br \/>\nYour huddled masses yearning to breathe free,<br \/>\nThe wretched refuse of your teeming shore.<br \/>\nSend these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,<br \/>\nI lift my lamp beside the golden door!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=6359435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Emma Lazarus<\/strong><\/a> (1849 \u2013 1887) was a Jewish-American poet and activist most famous for &#8220;The New Colossus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u201cSo whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.&#8221;<br \/>\n<em>Matthew 7:12<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Stars_and_Stripes_Forever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>The Stars and Stripes Forever<\/strong><\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This cheery marching tune is often heard at parades on Independence Day, Memorial Day, or Veterans Day.<\/p>\n<p><em>By <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Stars_and_Stripes_Forever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Phillips Sousa<\/a>, beautifully played by the\u00a0United States Marine Band.\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/a-7XWhyvIpE?rel=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Here are a few helpful links:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usa.gov\/Topics\/Independence-Day.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>USA.gov<\/strong><\/a>: Official information about Independence Day, patriotic music, American recipes, fireworks safety, and more from the U.
