This is when I whittle down the reading pile I&#8217;ve accumulated by my chair during the convention season and travel months. While some of my winter reading involves new and untried authors, there are a few old favorites I return to over and over\u00a0(like C. S. Lewis, I&#8217;m even old enough to admit to enjoying children&#8217;s fiction).\u00a0 I believe that children need to see their parents reading, but I also know how limited time and attention can be when you are in the early years of homeschooling. In\u00a0<em>The Supper of the Lamb<\/em>\u00a0the subject is supper, but it&#8217;s about a lot more than food. It is described as a &#8220;surprising and thought-provoking treatise on everything from prayer to poetry to puff pastry,&#8221; and it&#8217;s one of the books that spends more time by my chair than on the shelf. Described as &#8220;the spiritual autobiography of a love,&#8221; it is the story of a young couple, friends with C. S. Lewis, and their great love and loss. I have enjoyed each of these volumes at different times of my life, because each has a different focus. It was just recommended to me by my friend, Kathy of <a href=\"http:\/\/learndifferently.com\" target=\"_blank\">Learn Differently<\/a>, and I have already found in it a number of unfamiliar works, as well as many old favorites. Make no mistake\u2014this is beautiful, classic poetry, not a collection of Hallmark sentiments, and as such, it&#8217;s a worthy addition to any library. There&#8217;s just something magical about this story of a boy and a phoenix, and I\u00a0keep both a hardcover copy and a Kindle version always on my shelf. In <em>The Dragon of Cripple Creek<\/em>, adventure comes in the form of a dragon, found in a most unexpected place. With beautifully crafted prose, well-drawn characters, and a thought-provoking storyline, this\u00a0relatively recent book is suitable for all ages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Peleg-Chronicles-3-Book\/dp\/B00XJ7MBEY\/ref=as_li_ss_il?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1485204401&amp;sr=1-4&amp;keywords=peleg+chronicles&amp;linkCode=li1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio&amp;linkId=7a994e59f136e283ad655bd02d62cf06\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=B00XJ7MBEY&amp;Format=_SL110_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=everydayeducatio&amp;l=li1&amp;o=1&amp;a=B00XJ7MBEY\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>The Peleg Chronicles: <em>Foundlings<\/em> (1), <em>Paladins<\/em> (2), and <em>Loresman<\/em> (3) by Matthew Christian Harding<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a book that boys will love,\u00a0it would be hard to top The Peleg Chronicles, especially if your boys enjoy feudal epics with\u00a0knights,\u00a0princesses,\u00a0dragons (dinosaurs), giants, and\u00a0more. Harding is a master of the cliffhanger ending\u2014I find it hard not to read his books in a single setting, but it&#8217;s not as easy to burn the midnight oil as it used to be.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0938501526\/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0938501526&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=everydayeducatio&amp;linkId=FZIBABO6AWCEGMB2\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=0938501526&amp;Format=_SL110_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio\" alt=\"Murder in the Vatican\" width=\"71\" height=\"110\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"http:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=everydayeducatio&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0938501526\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Murder in the Vatican<\/em>: The Church Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes by Ann Margaret Lewis<\/h3>\n<p>I really enjoy Sherlock Holmes, but Sir Arthur Conan-Doyle didn&#8217;t write nearly enough. I am wary of most books written as sequels to a classic series, because they are usually just plain awful. This was recommended by a friend, though, and I throughly enjoyed it. I especially loved the cameo appearance of a little deacon named Brown (from G. K. Chesterton&#8217;s Father Brown stories, which you must read, if you haven&#8217;t already). I&#8217;m hoping for more from this author.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond these selections, there are other old favorites I turn to when I&#8217;m extra tired or not feeling well. Some of these are among my 1001 Good Books, but others\u00a0are what I call fluffy books\u2014light and untaxing, and just good clean fun. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Father Brown mysteries by G. K. Chesterton<\/li>\n<li>Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis<\/li>\n<li>Agatha Christie mysteries<\/li>\n<li><em>The Indifference of Juliet<\/em> by Grace S. Richmond<\/li>\n<li><em>Under the Tuscan Sun<\/em> by Frances Mayes<\/li>\n<li>Mitford series by Jan Karon<\/li>\n<li>Mrs. Pollifax books or anything else by Dorothy Gilman<\/li>\n<li>Brother Caedfel mysteries by Ellis Peters<\/li>\n<li>Dame Frevisse mysteries by\u00a0Margaret Frazer<\/li>\n<li>Anything by Mary Roberts Rinehart<\/li>\n<li>Spy stories by E. Phillips Oppenheim<\/li>\n<li>A few of the early Tarzan books, especially <em>Tarzan of the Apes<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Anything by Louis L&#8217;Amour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are countless other books from the first half of the 20th century that I&#8217;ve enjoyed, but this is probably enough for now. I&#8217;ll try the first 30 pages or three chapters of almost any book, but if I&#8217;m not interested by that point, I set\u00a0it aside. Life is too short, and my reading pile is too tall to be stuck with a book I don&#8217;t find engaging.\u00a0I hope you feel free to exercise that same privilege.
