Books provide hours of delight at just pennies per hour, and of course, I have\u00a0a few suggestions (it was hard to whittle down the list!). I&#8217;ve linked to the editions I own (or owned, in the case of <em>Little Women<\/em> and <em>Two Little Savages<\/em>) and believe to be suitable for gift-giving. I gave her this pretty Puffin in Bloom edition to remember the evening by, and she texted me today that she&#8217;s almost to chapter five. In case you don&#8217;t remember it, <em>Little Women<\/em> is described as &#8220;a semi-autobiographical account of [Alcott&#8217;s]\u00a0childhood years with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts.&#8221; It&#8217;s a great story that begins during the Civil War and conveys an authentic sense of the time and place, along with laughter, tears, and a boatload of frugal and creative ideas. I read <em>The Dragon of Cripple Creek<\/em> as soon as it came out, and loved it, from Ye, the ancient dragon, to the the setting in the American West.\u00a0The heroine, Kat, is appealing and adventurous. It&#8217;s the kind of book C. S. Lewis was talking about when he said \u201cA children&#8217;s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children&#8217;s story in the slightest.\u201d <em>The Dragon of Cripple Creek<\/em> is suitable for a family read-aloud or as a gift for a special young person.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Jesse-Tree-Geraldine-McCaughrean\/dp\/0802854036\/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1481659193&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=the+jesse+tree+by+geraldine+mccaughrean&amp;linkCode=li2&amp;tag=everydayeducatio&amp;linkId=171d5f25931b0881be8c6a561e0af676\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=0802854036&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=everydayeducatio&amp;l=li2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0802854036\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gIoltS\"><em>The Jesse Tree<\/em><\/a> by Geraldine\u00a0McCaughrean<\/strong>: I was looking for a seasonal\u00a0book for my grandchildren, and came across this on a list of great holiday reads. McCaughrean is the author of the excellent introductory version of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hq5kxz\">The Canterbury Tales<\/a><\/em>\u00a0I recommend as a context resource in <a href=\"https:\/\/everydayeducation.com\/product\/british-literature-english-4\/\"><em>British\u00a0Literature,<\/em><\/a> so I was\u00a0certain this would be a clear retelling of the stories in the Jesse tree. I wasn&#8217;t disappointed. McCaughrean framed the Jesse tree stories in an engaging tale of a curious young boy and a\u00a0curmudgeonly old woodcarver, and each story was told in a fresh, yet faithful way.<\/p>\n<p>If you aren&#8217;t familiar with the Advent tradition of the Jesse tree, it is a gathering of\u00a0Bible stories from creation to the birth of Christ. The stories are often told or read one per day during Advent, sometimes with an accompanying project of making small ornaments to hang on a branch or tree, thus the &#8220;tree&#8221; part of the name. <a href=\"http:\/\/annvoskamp.com\/\">Ann Voskamp<\/a> has written quite a bit\u00a0about\u00a0the Jesse Tree tradition, and you can read more about its origins and download free printable ornaments at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjessetree.com\/\">MyJesseTree.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Fiction for you<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Awakening-Miss-Prim-Novel\/dp\/1476734240\/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1481659957&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=The+Awakening+of+Miss+Prim&amp;linkCode=li2&amp;tag=everydayeducatio&amp;linkId=4c26e2e92d49b0d051e06080360c685a\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=1476734240&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=everydayeducatio&amp;l=li2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1476734240\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gIoRIb\"><em>The Awakening of Miss Prim<\/em><\/a><\/strong> by\u00a0Natalia Sanmartin Fenollera: I&#8217;ve bought at least three copies of\u00a0<em>The Awakening of Miss Prim<\/em> so\u00a0far, and recommended it to my reading friends.\u00a0The story begins with Miss Prudentia Prim\u00a0applying for the position of private, live-in librarian in beautiful San Ireneo, a\u00a0harmoniously un-modern town where &#8220;many families\u00a0. . . invested all their time and expertise\u00a0. . . in personally seeing to their children\u2019s education and giving classes to the children of others as well.&#8221; As the story unfolds, Miss Prim\u00a0finds many of her firmly held ideas about\u00a0education, religion, love, marriage, beauty, and friendship challenged by her employer, the Man in the Wingchair. The unfolding story (and their relationship) is about ideas, \u00a0rather than about homeschooling, but I think that classical and Charlotte Mason homeschoolers and other non-traditional educators would find it appealing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Need more fiction suggestions? The <a href=\"https:\/\/everydayeducation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/eil-booklist-2015.pdf\">Excellence in Literature booklist<\/a>\u00a0(PDF) is a good place to start. It is an incomplete list of the classics I think everyone should read at least once. There are so many more I&#8217;d like to share, but these are all covered within the <a href=\"https:\/\/everydayeducation.com\/excellence-in-literature-curriculum\/\">Excellence in Literature curriculum<\/a>, so\u00a0I believe they are a good place to start.<\/p>\n<h2>Nonfiction<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fellowship-Literary-Inklings-Barfield-Williams\/dp\/0374536252\/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1481815472&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=The+Fellowship:+The+Literary+Lives+of+the+Inklings&amp;linkCode=li2&amp;tag=everydayeducatio&amp;linkId=c230819e46ea62541b7a179cecd221e2\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=0374536252&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=everydayeducatio&amp;l=li2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0374536252\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hxIEvg\"><strong><em>The Fellowship: The Literary Lives of the Inklings<\/em><\/strong><\/a> by Phillip and Carol Zalenski: I was, as my grandmother would have said, tickled to win this at a Circe conference a couple of years ago.\u00a0This isn&#8217;t a biography, but rather as the subtitle suggests, it is a look at what <strong>C. S. Lewis<\/strong>, <strong>J. R. R. Tolkien<\/strong>, Owen <strong>Barfield<\/strong>, and <strong>Charles Williams<\/strong> were reading, writing, and discussing\u00a0as they &#8220;sought to revitalize literature and faith in the twentieth century&#8217;s darkest years.&#8221; That may sound dry, but let me share a single sentence from the first page of the first chapter: &#8220;And we start our portrait of Tolkien with his mother \u2014 a welcome surprise in this tale of a group that rigorously excluded women \u2014 because Mabel Tolkien set in motion her son&#8217;s madly spinning top of a mind, from which epic poems, children&#8217;s stories, fantasy novels, invented languages, literary \u00a0essays, philological studies, songs, watercolors, and pen-and-ink sketches would take flight for the next eighty years.&#8221; Now . . . don&#8217;t you want to read more?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Just-Mercy-Story-Justice-Redemption\/dp\/081298496X\/ref=as_li_ss_il?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1481815662&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=just+mercy&amp;linkCode=li2&amp;tag=everydayeducatio&amp;linkId=74d2b5cbacb3ef997f12843af1f03698\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&amp;ASIN=081298496X&amp;Format=_SL160_&amp;ID=AsinImage&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;WS=1&amp;tag=everydayeducatio\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border: none !important; margin: 0px !important;\" src=\"https:\/\/ir-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/e\/ir?t=everydayeducatio&amp;l=li2&amp;o=1&amp;a=081298496X\" alt=\"\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/> <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hS2hKO\"><em><strong>Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by Bryan Stephenson: Standing in an airport bookstore just before a nine-hour flight, I spotted this intriguingly titled book. My first thought was of\u00a0Micah 6:8 (paraphrased) \u2014 &#8220;He has shown you\u00a0what is good; and what does the <span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span> require of you, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?&#8221; I had a backpack full of books and an iPad packed with ebooks, but it didn&#8217;t matter \u2014\u00a0somehow I knew this was the book I was supposed to read on this flight. It lasted through four airports and three planes, and I still haven&#8217;t gotten over it. It is described as &#8220;an unforgettable true story about the redeeming potential of mercy,&#8221; and that&#8217;s what it is. Is it possible to read it without be touched and perhaps transformed? I hope not. I recommend it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Poetry<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2hAq8zN\"><em><strong>Collected Poems, 1909\u20131962<\/strong><\/em><\/a> by\u00a0T. S. Eliot: I keep this book by my chair, and savor bits of Eliot&#8217;s verse. I&#8217;m in &#8220;Choruses from the Rock&#8221; at the moment, but sometimes open the book at random for a taste of something different. Like the richest of chocolate truffles, Eliot&#8217;s poetry is best enjoyed a bit at a time. There are 51 of Herbert&#8217;s beautiful poems \u2014 one per week \u2014 with commentary\u00a0that provides a thoughtful understanding of each poem.
