This year, I chose a warm, evocative poem by <strong>Edgar A. Guest<\/strong>, the author of many home- and family-focused\u00a0poems. Be sure to notice how he creates a whimsical, yet thoughtful mood using just a few carefully chosen words. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<h4>A Boy and His Dad<br \/>\nby Edgar Guest<\/h4>\n<p>A boy and his dad on a fishing-trip-<br \/>\nThere is a glorious fellowship!<br \/>\nFather and son and the open sky<br \/>\nAnd the white clouds lazily drifting by,<br \/>\nAnd the laughing stream as it runs along<br \/>\nWith the clicking reel like a martial song,<br \/>\nAnd the father teaching the youngster gay<br \/>\nHow to land a fish in the sportsman&#8217;s way.<\/p>\n<p>I fancy I hear them talking there<br \/>\nIn an open boat, and the speech is fair.<br \/>\nAnd the boy is learning the ways of men<br \/>\nFrom the finest man in his youthful ken.<br \/>\nKings, to the youngster, cannot compare<br \/>\nWith the gentle father who&#8217;s with him there.<br \/>\nAnd the greatest mind of the human race<br \/>\nNot for one minute could take his place.<\/p>\n<p>Which is happier, man or boy?<br \/>\nThe soul of the father is steeped in joy,<br \/>\nFor he&#8217;s finding out, to his heart&#8217;s delight,<br \/>\nThat his son is fit for the future fight.<br \/>\nHe is learning the glorious depths of him,<br \/>\nAnd the thoughts he thinks and his every whim;<br \/>\nAnd he shall discover, when night comes on,<br \/>\nHow close he has grown to his little son.<\/p>\n<p>A boy and his dad on a fishing-trip-<br \/>\nBuilders of life&#8217;s companionship!<br \/>\nOh, I envy them, as I see them there<br \/>\nUnder the sky in the open air,<br \/>\nFor out of the old, old long-ago<br \/>\nCome the summer days that I used to know,<br \/>\nWhen I learned life&#8217;s truths from my father&#8217;s lips<br \/>\nAs I shared the joy of his fishing-trips.<\/p>\n<h4>Summer Song<br \/>\nby William Carlos Williams<\/h4>\n<p>Wanderer moon<br \/>\nsmiling a<br \/>\nfaintly ironical smile<br \/>\nat this<br \/>\nbrilliant, dew-moistened<br \/>\nsummer morning,-<br \/>\na detached<br \/>\nsleepily indifferent<br \/>\nsmile, a<br \/>\nwanderer&#8217;s smile,-<br \/>\nif I should<br \/>\nbuy a shirt<br \/>\nyour color and<br \/>\nput on a necktie<br \/>\nsky-blue<br \/>\nwhere would they carry me?<\/p>\n<p><em>From the\u00a0<b><span id=\"header_title_text\"><a title=\"Al Que Quiere!\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikisource.org\/wiki\/Al_Que_Quiere!\">Al Que Quiere!<\/a><\/span><\/b>\u00a0collection of 1917.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s time for our annual summer poem.
